So, now that I have explained how online learning is different from traditional learning, how does online learning relate to education specifically? Does it add value to learning?
A problem exists in education today because we have not developed a standardized way to assess the learning impact of technology and digital learning. A curriculum that teaches students in an unstructured and unsupervised fashion doesn’t have sufficient measurement to assess its effectiveness.
This problem affects all education, but it is particularly pervasive in education because students’ learning is typically unrecorded. Students take courses online or they engage in group learning experiences, which are also often unrecorded. Students would not take traditional classes online or in a traditional classroom if they weren’t getting feedback or feedback on what they were learning.
Students are searching for a solution to this problem, and many researchers and organizations are developing metrics to measure this. This problem is also part of a larger problem, which is online learning as a separate discipline from education.
